Background
The Gisborne Wastewater Recycle Plant (GWRP) in Victoria, Australia, treats the sewage from the surrounding area.
At present, the plant treats over 600 million liters of sewage annually. After treatment, this sewage becomes Class B recycled water, suitable for stockfeed (not including pigs) non-food crops or food crops that are cooked, processed, peeled and/or grow over 1 meter above ground and for irrigation of recreational areas.
The wastewater treatment process includes various stages, one of which is filtration.A competitor’s filtration system was installed in 2015 and after several years of operation, a decision was made to replace it due to its poor performance.
Challenge
Amiad was contacted to provide a solution to the existing filtration system that had failed after only 5 years’ service.
The new system needed to be able to flush at a very low pressure (1m), have a low profile and a small footprint. We also were asked to provide a duty standby solution replacing a single filter.
Solution
After reviewing the requirements and the on-site conditions, we provided a solution which included:
• 2 x 8” Electric Brushaway filters on a manifold
• Electrically operated butterfly backflush valves due to extremely low pressure
• Each filter was equipped with mechanically operated butterfly valves to allow for online servicing (duty standby)
Results
The system was installed in July 2021 and commissioned in August 2021. It has worked seamlessly from day one.
Western Water, the owners and operators of Gisborne Wastewater Recycle Plant, have since ordered a 3 x 8” Electric Brushaway filters on a manifold system for their Bacchus Marsh operation which will be installed Q1 2022.
