Background

The customer is one of the leading EPS producing companies in Israel and has a wide range of specialized products for a variety of industries and applications, such as food storage containers, agricultural applications, cold storage insulation, building foundations, etc.
For over 20 years, the facility had been using an existing Amiad disc filtration system to protect their heat exchanger with good results.
Due to the age of the existing system and the high maintenance costs incurred, the customer decided to replace it with a newer system. An additional consideration was to install a system that would provide increased flow rate and allow for expansion.
Based on the performance of the older system, the manufacturer contacted Amiad for a suitable solution.

Challenge

The production process at this EPS facility generates airborne EPS particles, which then enter the cooling tower. As a result, the heat exchanger becomes clogged.
The filtration solution needed to be compact and lightweight, as the installation area was limited and had weight restrictions.

Solution

Even though the current flow rate would accommodate the use of Spin Klin™ Nova Trio, due to the fact that the customer plans on expanding the production facility, requiring higher flow rates, it was decided that the Spin Klin™ Nova Trio Plus, with tripled filtration area and almost the same footprint, would be the best solution in this case.

System 1: 8” Spin Klin™ Nova Trio Plus

Water source: Cooling tower
Current flow rate: 150 m³/h (660 gpm)
Future flow rate: up to 250 m³/h (1,100 gpm)
Filtration degree: 130 micron
Working pressure: 2.0 bar (29 psi)
Backwash pressure: 2.5 bar (36 psi), with downstream valve
Installed: May 2021

System 2: 6” Spin Klin™ Nova Trio Plus

Water source: Cooling tower
Current flow rate: 100 m³/h (440 gpm)
Future flow rate: up to 200 m³/h (880 gpm)
Filtration degree: 130 micron
Working pressure: 2.5 bar (36 psi)
Backwash pressure: 2.5 bar (36 psi), with downstream valve
Installed: May 2023

Both systems were supplied with Amiad’s cloud-based ADI-X controller with its dedicated app, enabling real-time information and remote tuning of operational settings and improved performance, based on water and environmental
changes.

Results

After installing System #1 in the new cooling tower and seeing the excellent performance of the Spin Klin™ Nova Trio Plus, the customer decided to upgrade the older Amiad disc filtration system and installed an additional Spin Klin™ Nova Trio Plus.
Both systems are providing the necessary filtration solution with a minimum footprint.
